I started on beta blockers about 4 months ago, and my high blood pressure dropped back to the normal range right away. It also helped me to lower weight. I use Quinipril and it works great. I also suggest some aerobic exercise, that helps a lot.

And you say your doctor has not put you on any medication for this? Choose a new doctor, pronto! And consider some lifestyle changes. If you smoke, quit. If you drink, limit yourself to one beer per day. Don't save 'em up during the week and drink all seven on Saturday night - the idea is to spread 'em out so the effect on your liver, kidneys, and blood pressure is reduced.
Buy a book on low-fat cooking and learn to cook. You and your wife could share the fun of learning tasty new dishes, and I bet your stepping in and helping more with chores like cooking and cleaning up would go a long way towards reducing stress in both of you. DON'T FORGET: a happy mate is of immense importance to a guy's overall health and wellbeing!
Check with your new doctor to be sure you're healthy enough to begin a regular exercise program, and then start off slow and mild: three hours a week, every other day, at the "Y" in the swimming pool would be ideal. After a couple months, add another hour per session and use the exercise machines. You do not have to get all competitive like some obsessed guys do: I intensely hate handball and raquetball and I'll be d a m n e d if I'll let some smartaleck goad me into that kind of competitiveness. What I suggested is more than enough for over-fifty guys like you and me.
So there's a few things you can do - and they won't just help your blood pressure, they'll enhance everything about ya! And when the new doc puts you on a medicine to control your blood pressure - take it, for pete's sake! It isn't unmanly or any of that horsecrap. I mean, I'm a hulking six-foot, 200-plus-pound combat veteran, and nobody gonna call me unmanly 'cause I've grown a touch older and softer. 'Cause if they do, the response will be
"Semper Fi, suckah!" I encourage you to adopt the same attitude.

You need to make some lifestyle changes to lower your BP.

These are vital changes which will help lower:

# Don't smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product.
# Lose weight if you're overweight.
# Exercise regularly.
# Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat.
# Limit your sodium, alcohol and caffeine intake.
# Try relaxation techniques or biofeedback

If you want to extend your life a bit longer, make a change.

Good luck

There's nothing I can say that I'm sure your doctor hasn't already suggested.....cut out salt, excercise more, stay away from fats & sweets. You may even need some medicine to lower it.
But do SOMETHING....my mom never had check-ups, seemed perfectly healthy, and then one day at age 62 had a masssive stroke, went into a coma and died 2 days later.

What Can I Do?

High blood pressure is a lifelong disease. It can usually be controlled but not cured. Once you begin to manage it and start a treatment program, maintaining a lower blood pressure is easier. By controlling your high blood pressure, you'll lower your risk of diseases like stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney disease. You can do it!

The first thing to do is to have your blood pressure checked. If you have high blood pressure, you can do a lot to reduce it. Work with your doctor to determine the best treatment for you.

*
It may include reducing the fat (particularly saturated fat) in your diet, eating less salt, and changing your lifestyle by losing weight and getting regular physical activity.
*
Quitting smoking is also important to reduce your overall risk for heart attack and stroke.
*
Your doctor may recommend reducing how much alcohol you drink.
*
Many medicines also can help reduce and control high blood pressure. Your doctor will decide whether you need medicine in addition to dietary and lifestyle changes.

Be sure to look at our patient education sheets on high blood pressure. These can be printed out and taken to your physician. There are spaces for you to ask questions and for your physician to write special instructions for you.

If your blood pressure remains high despite meds and behavioral and diet changes you might have a secondary cause of hypertension. Renal artery stenosis, hyperthyroidism or conns syndrome are 3 of about 8 causes of secondary hypertension. See your dr. to discuss if you are in the washington d.c. area i would be happy to see you.

your doctor needs to put you on meds for this, if he has then give them time to work. If not he should start you on some.
