It does hurt, but the pain is certainly tolerable. You will feel the initial piercing of the skin and then your arm may get a little achy depending on how many tubes of blood that they take.

It really depends on the nurse and how well she knows what she's doing. I've had blood drawn where I've barely felt it and had no problems and then I've had blood drawn to where my veins collapsed they had to switch arms and I ended up with big bruises on both arms. When/if you veins collapse they sit and wiggle the needle around trying to get it to pump blood again and that becomes painful. Out of about the 50 times I've had blood drawn .. that's only happened 3 times. I actually like to have my blood drawn.. I think it's cool to watch but if you are faint at heart.. I advise against.

Good luck to you .. and stay strong!

PS... It's not nearly as bad as donating blood if you have ever done that. The needle they use to draw blood can probably fit inside the needle they use whe you donate blood.

Not really, if it's done right and you have reasonably good veins (so whoever is doing it gets one on the first try) then you're unlikely to feel much more than a pinch. If you're talking about a fingerstick for blood glucose level, then it hurts even less, though some people do feel some mild soreness at the site for a few hours at first.

Ask if they use a local anaesthetic, and where the needle goes in; if they say no, slap the area moderately hard just beforehand, look elsewhere and think of something pleasant, and promise yourself a little reward afterwards.

Not if the person taking the blood is good at what they do. I used to have this nurse at my dr's office that was so good at it that I never even felt anything but a tiny prick.

Usually, there's just a little sting as the needle goes in, then it's a piece of cake. It doesn't bother me at all. As one answerer suggested, you might get an incompetent phlebotomist who can't see, but they are rare.

Not if it is done correctly! If done correctly, it is virtually painless!
