I'm from Ohio, so I'm more familiar in picking out other fruit and vegetables. I have heard that size doesn't neccesarily mean a bountiful pomegranate, but what is it that one looks for?

First of all it should be big, the size of an orange or a medium size grapefruit. Then, the outside skin should be shiny. This is proof that it is fresh and not overripened. Sometimes they may be cracked on the outside, this is normal and it shows that the fruit is ripe enough. It also allows you to peek and see if anything is wrong with the inside.

I LOVE pomegranates! What I usually look for is like, no bruises on the outside (of course that means bruised, mushy seeds). Someone told you right as far as size. I had a pomegranate the size of a grapefruit once, sat down to eat it, & 1/2 the freakin seeds were mush! No bruises is the main thing that I look for. Oh & if they are like really REALLY hard, they are obviously dried up & no good too.

Go for the biggest, heaviest fruit in the bin. Give it a squeeze, and if a cloud of dust rises from the crown, toss it back; it's long past its prime. But if the skin feels thin, as if the seeds are ready to burst right through, you've got a good one.
