Lantus is quite effective as a long-lasting insulin, and will provide coverage over a 24-hour period (at least that's what the literature in the packaging says). In conjunction with your sliding scale of Novalog, you hopefully will see much better results over time. But, be particularly vigilant in your monitoring of glucose levels, especially in the beginning. This is important any time you change your treatment regimen. And, if you try to just go for walks, even if only a 10-minute walk at a time, it's 10 minutes more exercise than you usually do, and will be of great benefit in helping to lose weight, and possibly lower your dosages, or at least help provide you better control. It might take time and some hard work, but there is a shining light and some hope for better control ahead, Russ.

This will help you feel better--

I realize that conventional health care is necessary and appropriate. That having been said, there are also many things WE can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.

Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:

Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate

Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes. Learn how to use these herbs and don't fall victim to diabetes needlessly. You can find out about about them on line, or in a book I read cover to cover--

"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313

The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which came out in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject if you decide to go that way.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Best of luck.

Just recently found this 8-minute non-profit video http://www.rawfor30days.com/view.html , about diabetes diet. Click on the link, then click 'View Windows Media' to watch it.You'll be glad you saw it.

Lantus is a long-lasting (24 hour) insulin and Novolog is a fast-acting (lasts over about a 3-hour period) insulin. Lantus helps prevent you from slipping into DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma) and is a very effective insulin as it releases a little bit of insulin slowly over a 24-hour period. Novolog is used more as a reaction (sliding scale) to a high blood sugar and to match carbs to insulin for Type 1 diabetics (like my son). Both are great! The good news is that once you get your diabetes back in control, you may be able to first get off the Novolog and then possibly the Lantus. Remember to follow the advice of your Endcronologist and nutritionist. Your diet and exercise are crucial to getting back in control. Good luck to you!

Yes, lantus works, but it may not solve all of your problems and it will almost certainly not give your perfect glycemic control at first, the dose will probably need to be adjusted. Lantus is a long acting insulin, it gives you a baseline level of insulin throughout the day, so it will lower levels, but it will not be enough, by itself, to take care of the rise in sugar that happens when you eat a meal, that's what the short acting novolog is for.
As for weight loss, it's a good thing for everyone (well, not everyone, anorexics, for example, but you know what I mean), but especially type 2 diabetics, as your weight goes down your glycemic control may get better without changing your meds at all, and some people can even get normal blood sugar levels just with weight loss (though I don't think that will be the case with you since you require insulin treatment).

Continue using the meds u have been given. Rember some meds take a few days to get adjusted to ur body. Also STRESS & infections can raise ur sugar levels(I KNOW) LOL Keep a check on ur carb & sugar intake. Eat the smaller meals up to 6x's a day & start small with exercise(short walk daily & increase steps daily. If u sit down lift ur legs & arms & exercise) small things make a big diff. As u lose weight ur levels should come down.I hope ur seeing an endocronologist for this, as they r the specialist in diabetes mellitus. good luck xo Donna :)

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.

And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

This question (s) is too complicated for this forum. You need professional help to get the right answers. Tell your doctor you want to attend some meetings led by a Diabetes nurse, a professional who really knows the subject and is not going to blow smoke . Good luck.
