I'm thinking its a first come first serve type of deal and if I get there first I'm going to eat as many shrimp as I want (usually I try to eat about 45 to 46), but my wife always tells me I need to stop after about 5 and share with everyone else.

in polite society, appetizer servings are 2 per person. this means you need to stop at 2, no matter who gets there first. keep in mind, if other guests and/or your hosts see you standing over the shrimp platter, devouring all of them like a hungry wolf, you will doubtless not be invited to another party...

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish...if you want to be known as the guy who ate all the shrimp...eat up. Otherwise, eat a handful and mingle. Then, at the end of the pary, someone should tell the host that 50 shrimp is not enough for 20 people!

50 shrimp for 20 people isn't much, now is it? And if you're eating 45 -46, you're basically bogarting this dish, right? I'd say 2 shrimp and then you're finished. Or bring a second shrimp appetizer that will feed the flocks!

you sound like me... that's why when I throw a party I buy 2 medium sized rings instead of one big ring... so that you can take one out from the beginning and when you see more people coming you bring out the second one...
also, i think that it's impt that if you are going to serve shrimp cocktail you should serve some other nice appetizers as well... can't have chips and dip next to shrimp cocktail???

Anyone who serves 50 shrimp for 20 people doesn't deserve good manners from anyone. Eat them all!

2 would be a polite share, 3 somehow is ok as it gives a warning that if they don't mind the shrimp you're out for double the take. take it easy though while you wait for responses, by starting to finish off the heads and licking each one clean - don't forget the drippings too !
