In response to another answer, I"m a nurse at a hospital and ANYONE can leave AMA- except for those with altered mental status. They are not mentally able to make a choice concerning their health care. The floor I work on has to take care of patients detoxing from alcohol, which can be very dangerous. Patients often hallucinate, are delusional, hear people talking to them, not know where they are, become violent and combative. We often have the pleasure of calling security to hold the patient down while we slap leather restraints on all 4 extremities and assign someone to sit at the bedside and watch them. Trust me-if they are any patients we'd gladly discharge it's the drunks but it is not safe. With all the agitation the body goes through, it often sends the blood pressure and heart rate sky high and can lead to stroke or heart attack! But to the asker of the question, yes you are responsible for the bill! Don't get falling down drunk and us nurses won't have to detox you!

Yes the ER will bill you and hold you liable. I f you were an illegal Mexican migrant, they won't but if you are a white American they will go for the kill. They can sue you in court & seize your bank accounts.

Also I now know that whenever you enter the premises of a hospital, if they feel you shouldn't be released, then they can keep you there against your volition - EVEN IF YOU WANT O LEAVE 'AMA' ( Against medical advice.) Even if they feel your blood pressure is too high! Once you enter a hospital or ER - you lose your civil liberties. I found out the hard way.

What's more, you're responsible for what you do when intoxicated, and eventually the booze will bite you. You may be alcoholic, but only you can guage that. Wait till you get in big trouble, and then you'll know. Or drop in at an AA meeting; it looks like all the nice types you'd find on a bus.

Oh don't worry, usually the people in the cuffs and getting arrested don't have a care in the world. Don't you worry, I'm surely paying enough taxes to cover your bills.

most likely you are responsible for the ER bill, and they are stiff. sounds like you can't handle your alcohol, you may want to address this before it becomes a really big problem...
