What about prune juice? Sometimes the juice is more effective because more prunes have to go into it to make the same amount of juice. I would try 1/8th of a cup and if he doesn't have a bowel movement in a 1/2 hour give him another 1/8th of a cup. That should loosen him up. I would try to find out what the cause is though, if he's on medication that's causing it, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. They usually know what is the safest product for use at any age. Check natural remedies also, that aren't prune related. I hope he feels better soon, that's very uncomfortable!

I have had children with this problem as well, these are old timy remidies but seem to work for my children. first place the baby on your lap and with your fingers gently roll your fingers around on the childs belly this imitates peristolic action, also make sure the baby is getting enough fluid the old timy method of getting enough water was to mix 1 part salt,to three parts water and a little sweetner, this is the old way of making saline solution. next I would check to see is the baby on formula? if so maybe its the formula if the baby is on milk the baby may be lactose intolerant at any rate when push comes to shove and you will know because his little knees will draw up and he will show signs of pain constipation hurts! a glycerian suppoasitory will help relieve the child but the true aim is to keep his fecal matter soft. Look at what the childs diet contains and finally it may just be that your baby just has some type of food allergies. keep a record of what the baby eats and drinks for about a week so you can see what may be causing his problem. last but not least ,keep a good amount of fluid going into him and consult your doctor. hope this helps. also no ice! it's constipating and a warm compress or heating pad often feels good on a stomach in distress. hope this helps.

Hi,

Children with constipation have bowel movements that are hard, dry and painful to pass. These stools may occur every day or may be infrequent.

The causes of Constipation may be due to various physiological and psychological conditions. It often begins when a child holds back a bowel movement. Perhaps the child has had hard, painful stools. A diet change, viral illness, hot weather, or travel can lead to hard stools. A bad diaper rash can cause painful passage of stool.

Other symptoms include stomachaches, cramps, vomiting, nausea, poor appetite, headaches and weight loss.

Some children with constipation may wet their beds at night. These children may have urinary tract infections because stool masses press on the urinary bladder and can block normal urine flow.

There are no specific tests to diagnose constipation. Parents should be aware when the child is having trouble in passing stool.

The treatment

Mineral oil or milk of magnesia is often used for this purpose. Cleanouts can be very messy since the child often cannot control the passage of the stool and medicine mixture.

Younger children may have to wear diapers again during the cleanout.

Increase fluids in the diet, especially juices.

In most cases of temporary constipation, the doctor may prescribe a laxative so that passage of stool becomes easier.

Fruit juices such as prune and apple usually work very well. One large serving is better than several small ones. I would try to get the child to drink at least one cup or more at a sitting. Also dried prunes work very well (at least they did with mine). Increasing water consumption if you can. Bran flakes soaked in liquid until soft and fed to the child is also helpful. Good luck!

100% Apple Juice, a full sippy cups worth, worked like a charm on my 18 month old. She was so plugged she was crying when it finally came out, cheese was the culprit to that, and the apple juice counters it perfectly. Prune juice helps too, but she likes apple J better.

HTH!

Diet is usually the culprit behind constipation whether we're talking about a child or adult. If your baby was doing just fine with his or her bowel movements and then begins experiencing trouble, you should examine their diet and see if any unusual changes have been made recently. Switching from breastmilk to formula can certainly lead to baby constipation, as can switching from formula to cow’s milk.

Feeding formula in general can cause baby constipation quite readily. So, if you are bottle-feeding your baby and they are suffering from constipation, try feeding a bottle of pure drinking water every day as well. This can help with the problem because stools need water in order to remain soft.

Emotional issues can also lead to constipation. When a baby becomes upset, the intestines can begin to malfunction. For some individuals this can lead to diarrhea. In others, constipation is the result.

There are several things you can do to help your child get through his or her constipation troubles. First of all, be sure you are providing your baby enough fluids. Drinking more fluids (preferably breastmilk and water) equates to greater amounts of moisture in your baby’s colon. This means the colon will not need to take fluid from your baby’s stool and cause it to become dry and hard. Take care and be well.

The quick fix is to try taking the baby's temperature rectally. It often stimulates them to go. Dietary fix is to up the amount of fiber your child is getting. Rice, bananas, and applesauce are all constipating, as are cooked carrots. Offer more whole grain foods - graham crackers to gnaw on for snacks, more fruits and veggies - less milk, cheese, and yogurt. You can also give juice - prune, cherry, grape, apple or pear juice - up to one ounce per month of age twice a day. I'd start with two or three ounces once a day and see what happens. You don't want to give them diarrhea. If that doesn't work, consult the pediatrician for more guidance.

i know from experience with my own kids, that you dont always want to take them to the doctor unless they are sick. what has always worked for years for my family, give your 1 year old a little prune juice in his or her cup. do it about once a day until the constipation gets better.

You should speak to your pediatrician. She/he may suggest liquid docusate sodium (Colace). It's a stool softener and can be used for short-term treatment of constipation. Fruit juices have varying amounts of fiber and can helpful in both treatment and prevention. Increased and regular adequate water intake will certainly help. But speak to your pediatrician first. Your child may have an existing condition I know nothing about.
