they have no animal fats in them.
Most chips do not now a days, and will state cooked in vegetabel oil, cooked in peanut oil/cooked in soybean oil. If they don't mention it on the package it will be in the ingredients list, chips are usually cooked in canola or soybean oil.
Some chips do have meat though, depending on the flavor, doritos is jsut cheese flavored (or ranch) and do not but you may have to be careful with certain brands such as "taco" flavored. Just read the back.
Things to look for in ingredients lists include lard, animal shortening, geletain, rennet, Glycerine, cochineal, carmine, or carminic acid.
If you are vegan though you will have a longer list of what to watch out for.

Frito-Lay uses only vegetable oils to fry their chips and they also do not use transfats to cook their products. Snacks like these aren't ever going to be exactly health foods, but this company does a decent job holding down harmful ingredients and even controlling sodium levels. The ingredient label for these chips must show the kind of oil used, so a quick read should give you this information at a glance. If there are ingredients you want to avoid, you need to become a label reader. Be alert to tricks like "no trans fat per serving" meaning less than one gram in whatever they designate as a serving. Anything that says "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" has transfats. Also beware of serving size which may be much smaller than what you normally eat or drink.

Actually, I believe the Salsa Verde ones have some kind of animal byproduct in them but I can't remember exactly what it is off hand. Check the ingredients as I am finding there are actually quite a few chips out there that are not vegetarian. I think the baked BBQ Lay's potato chips are another one.

Check the ingredient list. They appear to contain no animal fats, beyond milk fats.

No they don't. You can read the ingredients on the package if you're unsure, but my vegetarian friends love doritos.

Read the ingredients on the back and look for gelatin. This is in jello, gummy bears and marshmallows.
