I'm a vegetarian and I don't drink milk or eat eggs. Yet I eat bread and eat cheese. My sister bought this to my attention. Am I the only one?

I'm sure you're not the only one. The less animal products you buy, the better! Anything to reduce your contribution to animal suffering! It's actually good that you don't eat eggs. Although they are basically a chicken's period (so it's not like you're eating a baby chick), the commercial egg industry is pretty horrible right now. In 'Meat Market' author Erik Marcus found that of all the "food" animals, egg-laying chickens actually suffer the most terrible treatment of all. He even said that for meat-eaters considering going vegetarian, **eliminating eggs first would actually be the most compassionate move**. So you're on the right track!

"Battery hens live in highly automated, windowless sheds containing up to 100,000 hens; they are cramped in long rows of stacked "battery cages." Up to 10 hens may inhabit an area of 2.33 ft sq. That is less than half the size of a sheet of A4 (8.5x11) paper per hen; they have a wingspan of 30-32 inches. Battery cages have sloping wire floors that prevent a hen from sitting, sometimes causing a hen's feet to grow around the bars leaving her immobile and starving to death. Battery cages have wire walls in which hens often get their head stuck, leading to a slow death of starvation.

Male chicks, who are of no value to the egg industry, are immediately killed. They are either tossed into garbage bags, left to suffocate or to be crushed, or are macerated in high-speed grinders. For the female chicks, after birth they are kept in grow out buildings for about 20 weeks. They are often kept in dark except at feeding times.

To reduce cannibalism among frustrated hens, laying hens are often "debeaked" as chicks. Veterinary care is non-existent, as individual hens are considered cheap and expendable. Critically ill birds are thrown onto "dead piles."

The absolute saddest thing is that many hens at some point experience their uterus sticking to an egg and becoming prolapsed (falling out of their body). Because there is no way to properly monitor their great numbers, the hen is left to suffer as the other hens in the cage will begin to peck apart her uterus while it is still attached to her body. Supposedly that horrible experience is the cause of death for something like 20% of layer hens. Could be less, but the fact that ANY being has to experience that for the sake of human taste buds is apalling and unacceptable.

Any move away from supporting these industries is a good one! It is a true joy to take these terrible truths and turn them into something positive by using them as fuel to live compassionately.

I don't think it's weird, really--lots of people have different eating habits, whether vegetarian or not. I have a cousin who doesn't drink milk, but he will eat other dairy products. as long as your not calling yourself a vegan, it doesn't really matter. perhaps you should think about it and figure out why you're eating the way you are. it sounds like a good way to get yourself to not be so dependent on animal products... maybe in the future you'll decide to give up cheese, bread and anything else that comes from animals and become vegan.

Most likely not. I don't drink milk much simply because I don't like it, and lots of vegetarians give up eggs.

If you are not vegan it is normal to eat dairy.

Probably not, you're just in the not so severe vegetarian category. Some of them will eat eggs but no dairy. Some dairy, but no eggs.

No- it's not weird at all. I'm the same way.
Just as long as you don't claim that you're a vegan (I'm sure that would offend many people!!), you're fine.
:-)
