I have that cold/flu thing that everyone seems to be getting - coughing, blocked sinuses, fever, no energy. My sinuses are quite a bit better but the cough will NOT GO AWAY. This is day 11 and it's shown no real sign of improvement. Every couple minutes I'm hacking up teeny, tiny pieces of phlegm (not discolored except in the morning). The doctors are so overbooked that they don't want to see anyone whose fever isn't over 101. I've tried home remedies I found online like hot tea, honey, apple cider vinegar, peroxide in the ears, cough syrup - nothing is working. I'm going nuts trying to get rid of this thing - any ideas?

can the doctor just call in a prescription w/o you actually seeing them?? My doctor will do that if I describe all my symptoms...good luck and I hope you feel better soon!!
Also, try hot lemonade made from concentrate...

Well meanwhile if you are hacking up phlem that means that you have a productive cough which is good you definatly do not want to suppress it and make it hard..Drink plenty of water..
Then also call your doc,and exaggerate about your symptoms so they will give you a appointment today..or tommorrow..lower grade fever does not necessary mean that this is not serious..
Yes it might just be a simple cold...but what if this isn't..what if this turns into pneumonia? Or broncitis (that's what this sounds like to me)..
For now just drink alot of water...steam up a bathroom,or buy a vaporizer and inhale the steam,to get all the phlem out...and buy some Mucinex (or something with a expectorant) to cough all that stuff out even more..

I would schedule a Dr's appointment, but all the other stuff can't hurt. Try steam(being very careful not to get burned)might turn on hot water in shower and stay in steamy bathroom a few moments, not more than 15 min..Get something called Musinex, or some other over the counter which is designed to loosen phlegm. A persistent cough might be something serious, so do have a doctor look into it.

I would try something with Guaifenesin in it. Mucinex is one brand, Robitussin DM has it too. Um keep up the tea as the heat will help. I also used a hot rice sock to help open the Bronchial passages. You can take Guaifenesin if you aren't on any of the MAOI antidepressants/anti-psychotic drugs. It thins the bronchial secretions so that you can actually cough that stuff out rather than hack and hack and get nowhere. They also offer it with a cough suppressant so you won't cough as much but when you do it will be productive.

The cough can take a while before it starts to get better. Be patient, and keep taking your tea and honey. Just watch it to make sure it doesn't get worse, or develop into something else.

i have the same thing. i finally went to the doc and he prescribed an inhaler. he said that i had coughed and blown my nose so much that i had basically over stressed my innards, and the inhaler is to reduce the inflammation, so the coughs could be productive in getting rid of the bad stuff. i thought he was nuts, but tried it, dam, it worked...so, i also kept up my vitamins, vit c and drank more water, it is not all gone yet, will be a week tomorrow, but it is 95% gone...who would have thought....

Is he hydrating enough? If he pushes the fluids, the mucus will become less viscous, and thus easier to expel. Also, if he does some cardio exercise, this will break up more mucus that he will be able to get rid of more easlily. Hope this helps.

Alergy medison. If you've recently been sick your defences might be down making you alergic to your enviornment. Take some antihistomeans and it will go away. (If that's what it is)
