I know my female Chihuahua was 9mths when she came on heat. But is there an age / time to know for male pups?
My friend has a Tibetan Spaniel who she wants to breed... He seems to 'want to' ,-) & his testicles have dropped, but I dont know if they have fully dropped or if there is an age to know this, etc.. Can someone help her know when he is ready to stud??
At the moment he is 9mths.
Thank you all!! :)

OK, THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR ANSWERS SO FAR.. NOW WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHY A MALE SHOULD NOT BE USED TO STUD UNTIL THEY ARE 18MTHS OLD. I CAN SEE WHY A FEMALE SHOULDNT BE A MOTHER TOO YOUNG, BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE REASONS FOR A MALE NOT TOO AS IT IS NOT MY DOG AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOMETHING BEHIND ME TO ANSWER MY FRIEND WHY SHE SHOULDNT STUD HIM YET. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! :)

THERE IS ENOUGH DOGS IN THE WORLD TO EVEN THINK OF CREATING MORE!!!!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS TO THE DOGS AFTER THEY ARE SOLD AS CUTE LITTLE PUPPIES AND THEN THE FAMILY REALIZES THEY ARE TO MUCH OF A RESPONSIBILIY TO CARE FOR??? THEY ARE SENT TO A SHELTER WHERE THEY LIVE MISERABLE LIVES AND EVENTUALLY GET EUTHANIZED!!!! EVEN WORSE, THE OWNERS MIGHT KICK THEM OUT INTO THE STREET WHERE THE DOGS CONTINUE TO REPRODUCE, STARVE, AND DIE!!! SO IT IS BETTER TO STOP THE REPRODUCTION OF DOGS AND BE SATISFIED THAT THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PERFECTLY GOOD DOGS TO BE ADOPTED AND CARED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A healthy male dog is capable of reproducing at about 6 to 8 months of age... if the testicles have descended, usually by 6 months of age. if the dog is registered by AKC, you may conceivable breed the intact male, but he must be at least 8 months old for the subsequent litter to be registered properly. The first mating for an unproven stud dog is somewhat frustrating & they sometimes need assistance in "getting it right" Usually breeders will pair a young stud with a more "experienced" female! At 9 months, your boy, if he has all his plumbing, should be ready to mate....just be patient with him.

Smaller breeds of dogs can start to breed at the age of 6 months.
If you are not sure if the testicles dropped I would take the pup to the vet to be sure, if the testicles didn't drop, the pup may not be able to produce pups, but that is a 50% chance of not producing.

The testicles drop before 2 weeks old. My chihuahua was 9 mo. her first heat too and the male 7 mo. no puppies. the vet said fertile at a year. I'm hoping for puppies end of march

You male is ready. But I would wait a year. The female should be two years old.

to answer your question, dogs are sexually mature at 8-12 months old, but should not be used at stud untill at least 18 months or older.

Because dogs don't reach sexual maturity until they are 18 months old. He may be shooting blanks until that time. Sort of a waste of time, energy and money.
