Typically a dimsum breakfast or lunch is so satiating that it is considered an entire meal. But occasionally I have ordered a plate of Cantonese fried noodles (seafood) to conclude the lunch - only when I have company (3-4 people).

It is an afternoon meal eaten between midday and four o'clock. It is comprised of many small dishes and because of this dim sum tends to be eaten in a restaurant rather than at home. I suppose that it is a form of 'lunch'. It is NOT an appetiser and is NOT eaten in the evening.

It's more of a meal, but I guess can be eaten as apetizers. When I had it in Malaysia we went to a place that only served dim sum. We ate there a few times for breakfast. It was amazingly tasty!!!

If you can afford to order enough so that diners are satisfied, then it is a meal. If enough isn't ordered to satisfy hunger, then it's an appetizer or midday snack.
