The other day I was writing an email and for no reason my heart started beating extremely fast and I felt like I couldn't catch my breath. Then my heart rate gradually went back to normal after about 30 sec and I was fine. This happened again this afternoon and I have no idea what it is caused from. I am 23 and I excercise three times a week and am overall in good health. Has this ever happened to anyone and do you know what it is caused from?

Have you been drinking lots of coffee or drinks containing caffeine? That can cause palpatations. Are you keeping yourself well hydrated? Dehydration can also cause a rapid heart rate. There can be other physiological causes also, like a thyroid problem. Sometimes females get heart palpitations around the time of their period; don't know why, but a few docs have mentioned that.

If it happens again, give a short cough as soon as you feel it. That will often cause the heart rate to go back down to normal. I have a heart valve problem which sometimes causes palpitations and the cough thing works well for me.

You should make a doc appointment just for a check-up. The doc can listen to your heart to see if he hears a murmur and possible do an EKG just to make sure it looks ok. It's probably almost time for your tetanus booster anyway (usually get the last kid booster at age 15, then should have one at least every 10 years), so you can get that done when you go in for an exam. Oh, that isn't related to the palpitations, I'm just reminding you about the booster because lots of people forget about it. :)

Try not to worry about it, ok? Sometimes stress can also cause palpitations.
