Yes... There are two effective vaccines available, one called a 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine for adults (one of the "brand names" is "Pneumovax") and a 7-valent conjugate vaccine ("Prevnar" or "PCV7") for young children.

Hope that helps!

Yes there is a pneumonia vaccine named Pneumovax. It is given to adults who have had pneumonia or predisposed to having pneumonia. There are doctors who cannot decide on how often it should be given. Some say once and others say once every 5 years. My mother and I got it after 5 years, and both of us had a bad reaction to the second injection. Both of us had a lot of swelling in our arm that radiated to our deltoid muscle and to our back. It was painful. The first injection did not cause a reaction at all.

Pneumovax. Most people get it when they are 60 or older, or if they have had their spleen removed or if they are immunocompromised. Most people only need the shot once, but some do get it as often as once every five years.

There is a version of pneumovax for young children. Ask your pediatrician when your child should receive it.

But, pneumonia can be caused by litterally hundreds of different germs. Bacteria, viruses, fungus, etc. Pneumovax only covers one type of bacteria. If you are looking for protection against ALL forms of pneumonia, then I'm afraid that you are out of luck.

I know you've heard it a million times, but good hand washing really does work.

Yes they do. I had pnueumonia when I was 18. They gave me the shot when i was in the hospital for 3 months with it. The doctor recommended me getting it every 1-3 years....with the flu shot of course.

Yes and it's suppose to be good for 5 years. Most people get it when they get their flu shot. But I must say that my husband had the shot and a year and a half later he came down with a very bad case of pneumonia. Check out http://www.webmd.com/. Good luck: Blueladybug

It really depends who THEY is?
But, the USA has it for the ELDER and "AT RISK" people. ANY month is a good month TO get it! NOW, for instance, would be a good time, if you are an Elder person.

YES- but you cannot "catch" pnueumonia. It is usually caused when a cold or the flu persist and mucus builds up in the lungs.

There is a pneumonia shot. I think you have to get it more than once, but it's not every year.
