Genital herpes can take a few weeks to several months or even years to show any physically symptoms of the virus. Some people never show any symptoms (it's pretty rare though).

And, just because you two have been sexually active for 4 years doesn't mean she contracted it right in the beginning of your relationship. I was with an ex for almost 4 years and he actually NEVER got the virus from me, but, my current fiance contracted the virus a few months after we started dating. Everyone is different! Your girlfriend might have contracted it years ago and just never showed any symptoms or she might have contracted it just recently.

And, as for it being herpes simplex virus 1 in the genital area, it is totally possible. I saw someone above me questioning it, but it can happen. I personally have herpes simplex virus 1 (genital herpes). Even though HSV1 usually causes cold sores, it can also cause genital herpes. I've never had a cold sore in my life but I have had genital herpes outbreaks.

I hope that answered your question a little! Good luck!

About 80 per cent of people get HSV 1 by the time they're 30. Most people have it around the mouth, but some have it around the genitals. If they have it around the mouth it's called a cold sore. If they have it round the genitals it's called genital herpes.

There's a second herpes virus called HSV 2. You can get this in either site too. About 10 to 15 per cent of 30 year olds have this.

Infections are lifelong, and usually trivial from a medical point of view. However people seem to get more upset if they get the virus round the genitals than round the mouth, even though it's the same virus.

Unfortunately, you can't predict exactly when you'll be infectious, because the virus can sometimes be shed from the skin without symptoms. What you can predict, though, is that there's an 80 per cent chance that any 30 year old partner will have HSV 1, whether they know it or not.

Dental dams are a bit pointless now you both have the virus.

okay well most people answers were crap. i am not a doctor but i have hsv-1. It has happend before to me with someone. First off it does depend on if it is active or not. Just because she had it on her genital does not mean she has genital herpes now. She just got one break out from yours. Thats what my doctor had told me. Because when you get blood samples his only came up as type one and he never had it before. We took extra test to be sure. I know it doesnt make sense but no std or sti does. Hope this helps and everything is okay. takecare.

It's possible but extremely rare... supposedly even it you do not have an outbreak you can "shed" the virus, and supposedly even if you do not have a break out you have the virus in your saliva... but chances are if you do not have an active break out you are not going to give someone herpes on their genitals- it's very rare.. but you could have had a minor breakout that was so minor you didn't even notice it and obviously did what you did and then gave it to her down there... but it's very rare... but does happen- I would be skeptical if I were you though, because normally unless you have the blisters, or the wet sore.. you normally won't transmit it especially down there

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

remember that you can remove genital warts by surgery, freezing, laser, acid or cream but genital warts can reappear again and again because genital warts appears when your immune system is weak!

I got diagnosed with herpes type 2 about seven years ago, when I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. However, Not only was I able to remove all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to start dating again!

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

No, not necessarily. Just because you have something it doesn't mean the other person gets it instantly. You can go for years without infecting them, or you can infect them the first time around. It's a bit of a gamble, but it's kind of silly of you not to use protection given you've gential herpes. That's irresponsible.

Type I does not turn into Type II. They are different viruses. But you can have Type I on your genital area if you received oral sex from someone who has Type I. And you can even have Type II on your mouth. For type I they sell all types of medicine at the store. For type II outbreak, go to doctor. Type II is an STD.
