Yes, it can be. You'll have to learn to read ingredients even better than before, and you'll also have to learn about which restaurants are now off-limits and that's hard socially and familially. My friends and family were disappointed when they learned that Olive Garden and Red Lobster were now off the list. They could handle not visiting the chainy steakhouses du jour, but there are lots of places that just aren't worth it.
As for the ingredients, I've been vegan for 8 years and I don't eat whey, casein/casenate, gelatin, or even honey. A lot of vegans will eat honey, but it really depends on where you draw your line in the sand. I'm not going to totally get into "what makes a vegan," but I am sure that you'll be surprised by the new restrictions you'll find on your diet. Personally, I can't stand vegetarians. I think they are weak, have little or no conviction, and aren't willing to make the sacrifices vegans make. Like I say, "when vegetarians grow up, they become vegans."

Being vegan isn't hard at all, not when you remember where the non-vegan food you are eating comes from. And there's always soy-cheese! I thought that too before become I became vegan, about cheese, but so far so good!

So the meat-eaters and vegetarians all agree that it's too hard. Is that a surprise? What about those of us who are living it? We seem to agree amonst ourselves, too. From a very happy vegan I will tell you - no, it's not hard. Yes it takes effort, but any healthy diet does. And we all know that the animals are worth that effort. Watch Meet You Meat, know your reasons, and the choice is easy. It's all about the willingness to learn new things and learning to love cooking (if you don't already). Visit the vegan forum on VeggieBoards.com for all the info you need. Nutrition, recipes, brand reviews, dealing with social situations, etc. Even if there are hard times, REMEMBER THAT YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING. Good luck!

And to a recent poster: VEGETARIANS DO NOT WEAR LEATHER. IF YOU PURCHASE LEATHER, THAT IS ANIMAL FLESH. YOU ARE NOT A VEGETARIAN. In the age of the internet, you can not claim that that being vegan is hard because things like shoes and wine will be hard to find...

If you are a vegetarian already it isn't hard. If you are an omnivore it probably will be. You have to be sure that you REALLY want to do this. You can't eat Meat fish and poultry and in addition vegans don't eat dairy ,eggs, honey, wear wool or leather or use wax. a good vegan website is the vegan society's website and a great recipe book is the Absolutely animal free cook book by Wendy Turner.

It's not hard if you plan your meals and know how to read food labels for animal products. I've found it to be quite easy when I shop at vegan friendly places such as a natural and organic grocery store. A lot of the products there are vegan and I can find a ton of food to eat. It only gets hard when you try to go out to restaurants that don't cater to vegans by having a lot of options for you.

OK-I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian but I wanted to comment that it depends how important it is to you. Know that it will limit your life in many ways and make the decision from there.
Dreadhead may be oh so compassionate to all the little animals but he's got a lot to learn about tolerance towards his fellow human beings. We all have the right to make the choices that are best for us and shouldn't be judging others lifestyles.

You should just try it out for yourself and see whether it is easy or hard for you. I'm a vegetarian and have eaten a vegan diet at various times. It's not something I could sustain throughout my whole life because eggs and dairy are in a lot of foods that I enjoy, so it was too limiting for me.

it will be very hard to change from veggie to vegan...it will also mean that you can not even wear leather shoes...by-product of an animal & you will have to read the label on everything...as even some wines have animal 'filings' in them. i'm a veggie..but wouldnt take the further step to a vegan. good luck though!

pretty weird question, "become" a vegan... i'm a meat eater.... I reckon if you are a vegetarian, it's a consious decision you are happy with, its not like some chore you have to see through.
if you decide to become a vegan, then go for it, if you feel that it's not the right decision, then go back to what you are comfortable with.
you dont have to sign declarations on these choices you know - just be yourself and you'll be happy.

First start with egg omelet, then go on to other egg varieties and it would be easy. While at it, try out chicken - start with tandoori chicken. Anyway, when people are turning from Non-veg to vegetarian, why this desire to change from veg to vegan?
