Jesus ate fish? So what? You aren't Jesus. Jesus probably also ate chicken sometimes, only the disciples didn't write a running commentary on his diet so it didn't get reported. Does that mean you should eat chicken? Admit it. Jesus has nothing to do with it. You don't have a REASON other than taste to keep eating fish, you are looking for an EXCUSE. So you latch on to your dad's comments about Jesus and fish. If you want to eat fish, eat fish. It's a valid choice. But no, you won't still be a vegetarian. Vegetarians don't eat animals, no matter what Jesus did.

A fish is a member of the animal kingdom and while they are not the Einsteins of the animal world they still think, feel pain and bleed. The Vegetarian Society's official website says that 'A vegetarian eats neither Fish, Flesh nor Fowl' . In short they don't eat anything with a face.
at the moment you are a pescavore a non - meat eating omnivore. To earn the veggie tour-shirt you will have to cut out the fish and seafood!!!!

As people have said, someone who eats fish isn't *really* a vegetarian, but so what? Does it matter what people are classified as as long as they are eating a diet that they find good?
Fish has been shown to be very good for you, healthwise. Lots of veggie studies say meat is bad for you. I may disagree with that, but about the only people I've ever seen say fish is unhealthy is Peta, and we all know they're just propagandists, and even they don't say much. Hell, even most of the statistics I've seen that suggest meat is bad say fish is good; regular fish eaters are the healthiest group around. This shows even people who don't want you to eat fish can't use the health argument.
Also, I don't think you can really be cruel to fish because they aren't sentient. They don't have the mental capacity to even realise that they are alive, and can't comprehend anything in the way we can, including pain, and therefore they can't suffer.
The way they react to their environment is very complex, but it's just complex instinctive reactions, like when a human pulls his hand away from a flame. You don't think about it, and that is how fish are all the time.
They can be likened to a computer. Very complex reactions based on what keys you press, etc, but it isn't sentient, and you can't be cruel to it. You can't be *cruel* to an insect, I think most people acknowledge that, and neither can you be cruel to a fish.
I find the 'everything with a face' argument very overly-idealistic, senseless and pointless.

What do you mean "vegetarians who don't eat fish"? That is like saying "Christians who like Jesus"... It is just understood.
All vegetarians do not eat fish because vegetarians do not eat animals.
In fact, not eating animals is quite specifically what vegetarians do.
However, I feel no need to persuade you or *sound convincing* because a person has to come to the decision of becoming a vegetarian on his/her own because that is the only way being dedicated to the lifestyle works.
So, kudos on cutting out so many animals from your diet. It will make vegetarians' lives so much easier if you do not refer to yourself as a vegetarian or any term thereof because doing so causes confusion and taints the very word.
Hope you become a veggie someday, but that is up to you.
:)

The problem is in your definition of vegetarian. A vegetarian is not one who simply stopped eating meat, but eats eggs, fish etc. Vegetarianism involves not eating higher order animals, insects and birds etc., and their eggs since the egg is a potential animal. Now unfetilised eggs are considered acceptable for vegetarians.
So, whether to eat fish or not is upto you, but for a vegetarian, fish is a simple no.
Vegetarians eat milk and milk products because it doesn't hurt the animal. Similarly for honey too.

Sorry, but there are groups of people that eat nothing but meat and diary products. Take the Masai tribe in Africa. They are tall, very healthy and have no heart disease. It's fine to be a vegetarian but the believe that meat is bad for health is erroneous. Fish are cold blooded but do have a nervous system so they are likely to feel pain and that is probably the argument against killing and eating fish.

Sanam is right do not treat you body as a graveyard for the animals,in my country,we have this lives liberation event every Sunday which a group of people will buy live fishes and craps and take boats to the see to liberate them, before the liberation,we recite Amitaba Sutra for them and release them into the sea,you have to see it to understand how they react,in the sea, some will stay on the surface of the water before swimming away, they even know what is gratefulness and freedom, and that is freedom for a hundred of them,so if you have the chance to come to Singapore, come join us,good luck

I don't eat fish for the same reason I don't eat other meat: I feel that it is wrong to kill an animal for food when there is no need to. We are able to get all the goodness from meat, including fish, in other foods and tablet form. If you sit down and really think about it you will probably come to the same conclusion as me. It's one thing to kill a living creature, it's another thing to unneccesarily kill, decapitate and eat the flesh of said creature. It's barbaric.
