I was reading the Nytimes today and saw an article on how conservative groups are not backing the mandatory HPV vaccine in certain states because they believe it will cause promiscuity among girls. For all you conservatives, how would a vaccine promote promiscuity? Isn't promiscuity caused by a number of other issues like lack of sexual education, low self esteem, etc.? There are many more STDs out there that are not protected against so it is not a get of jail free card. It is a preventative measure just like a MMR or tetanus shot? I mean do tetanus shots promote children to go step on rusty nails...

There have been some concerns that the perception of safety resulting from introduction of a prophylactic HPV vaccine will lead to an increase in unsafe behaviors and premature sexual activity among adolescents (“behavioral disinhibition”). Some organizations have expressed their support for universal availability of HPV vaccines while emphasizing that vaccination should not be a substitute for sexual abstinence until marriage and fidelity after marriage (“Family Research Council”, “Focus on the Family”). Media coverage has cited such concerns as a potential barrier to vaccine acceptance and implementation, and several small studies also have cited this as a barrier to parental and provider acceptability (Olshen et al. 2005, Davis et al. 2004). Concerns about behavioral disinhibition are based on assumptions that perceptions of HPV risk protect adolescents from exposure to HPV and that fear of HPV is a motivation for safer sex and/or abstinence. While data are limited, several examples cited below may provide some insight into the potential impact of HPV vaccination on behavior. National Survey of Family Growth data (Abma et al. 2004) show that only 10% of male and 7% of female adolescents who have never had sex cite “don’t want STD” as the main reason for not having sex. Knowledge of HPV as an STD is extremely limited in both male and female adolescent and adult populations (Dell et al. 2000, Waller et al. 2003). Studies of emergency contraception and condom availability programs addressing similar concerns also showed no differences in unprotected intercourse, frequency of intercourse, number of sex partners, or sexually transmitted infections (Raine et al. 2005, Smoak et al. 2006). Based on a small number of reports, the belief that HPV vaccination will increase the risk of sexual promiscuity or risky sexual behavior (Schiller et al. 2004) does not appear likely to manifest (Monk et al. 2006, de Melo-Martin 2006). Parents have generally indicated that this is not the most important issue (Hymel 2006). Although the evidence does not support that the introduction of HPV vaccination will lead to changes in sexual behavior, post marketing monitoring will be important (Saslow et al. 2007).

Yes, that claim is ridiculous. What about the fact that it would also protect your daughters if they saved themselves until marriage and happened to marry someone with HPV, then got cervical cancer? Not offering girls this protection is selfish.

And it's true, certainly if you weren't the promiscuous personality type a vaccine wouldn't change that. People are promiscuous already even without the vaccine. In fact, in general people who care about their health enough to be worried about protection from STDs are the ones that aren't promiscuous.

The same myth of causing promiscuity exists with birth control pills, and my doctor has told me that in his experience the people who get birth control pills early in life do it because they are cautious and conscientious, and they aren't normally the ones having early or promiscuous sex, quite the opposite in fact.

Although I am a conservative I agree with you. You have to understand though that not everyone who is right aligned is a bible thumper. Don't make this issue into a bash-the-conservative thing. Most of my conservative friends think that this type of religious peddaling is stupid. It's like the Sex Ed. thing promoting premarital sex. It's dumb.
