The excessive coughing you feel when you lay down at night is a response that your body is appropriately having. Mucus is trickling down the back of your throat causing a reflexive cough. (Does it feel like the back of your throat is being tickled?) It does this to protect your airway. What you likely have is called post nasal drip. You probably have sinus conestion which drips out of your nasal cavities at night because of positional reasons (gravity) when you lie down. There are plenty of over the counter medications that can help dry out your sinuses which will slow down the drip or eliminate it, but go see a doctor first if you have any questions. You could have a cold, flu or allergies. Good Luck

Yes, the coughing is due to the drainage from your nose and throat. Try sleeping on 2 pillows. If you sleep on your back, turn on your side or stomach. This will keep the drainage minimal. The trick is to keep your head slightly elevated. Also, have a glass of water by your bed, for that little tickle in your throat.

Because you are lay still in one position so the mucus settles causing a 'drowning' effect!! I've got Bronchitis at the moment and keep having to sit up in bed to relieve it.Then in the morning i'm even worse because the collection of mucus is disturbed and needs to come 'out'.

When you lie down it's easier for the flegm to get from your lungs to your wind pipe and the natural reflex is to cough it out. Try sleeping more upright.
