They say that the virus is fragile & needs a host to survive & its life is very short once out of the body. Then how is it possible for it to live in blood banks, in contaminated blood & infect people years later, if they get transfusion ???

HIV lives inside of blood cells it does die outside of the body, however the blood in the blood banks is like blood inside a body as it is preserved

What is really meant is that HIV only survives out side the body and is in the air. As long as the blood does not have any air or oxygen then the HIV can continue to survive. As with Blood transfusions the blood never meets the air. It goes from one medium (your Body) to another medium (the blood bag) and never meets with air. Therefore the medium that HIV needs to survive is present at all times.

If the conditions were perfect for survival the virus may live for about 30 hours. On a Peace of steel ( nail) exposed to air and the environmental trash floating in the air you can rest easily. It is far more likely that you would contract tetanus than HIV through this type of contact. So get a tetneus booster and go bend that nail over with a hammer.

outside the body HIV dies
Inside it lives
blood that is in a bank need to be properly stored to be donated into a live body so it is kept in storage so when it is used it is like live blood ready for transportation
that is the reason HIV survives in blood that is not in live body but is kept in somewhat similar condition.

Blood is the wet host or medium it needs to survive. Outside the body it dries up and is no longer contagious.
