We don't eat as much sausage as Europeans (esp. Germans) do, but little pork sausages served with fried eggs is a popular American breakfast. You might also try Vienna sausages (slightly spicy, comes in cans, made from beef and pork, sometimes with chicken too)-- served on bread, crackers or eaten alone. Hot dogs (on a bun) is a kind of American beef sausage eaten most for lunch and also at sports events. Served with a side of potato chips (crisps in the UK) or French fries. There are also German, Italian, Polish, Mexican, etc. varieties of sausages available in many US supermarkets. Similar to sausage are lunch meats such as bologna, liver cheese (leberkase in German), etc.

Actually we eat a variety of sausages. The melting pot of the world brings us German, Italian, and Spanish style sausages. I have eaten them all. However; here in the US we make a breakfast sausage out of ground pork. We also have kielbasa and smoked sausages. Hot dogs are not sausages!

We have many types here. The most popular here in the south is a loose sausage usually shaped into patties and fried. It is seasoned with primarily sage and red pepper made from pork. It is usually served at breakfast with eggs and biscuits with gravy.

And of course the all american hot dog, made of a variety of meats and highly processed. They are served on a bun with assorted condiments, usually mustard, catsup, diced onions

We also have kielbasa, and bratwurst (which I believe actually originated in germany, but has become quite popular here), usualy boiled or grilled served with either cabbage, peppers and onions, or rolls and mustard

Andouille- popular in new orleans, consist of cured pork and spices, it is smoked and dried, usually used to flavor other dishes

Boudin-also from new orleans, it is a fresh sausage using pork and rice, lightly smoked, usually served alone or with a roll

there are also quite a variety of sausages from italy and elsewhere that are available though less common.

I can only speak for my household. The types of sausage we like are "kielbasa" or anything polish sausages. Italian sausages and Venison sausage usually homemade. We hate Bratwursts.. YUK !

We serve then with baked beans, sauerkraut, and some just in a bed of sauteed onions and peppers before plopping it on a bun and smothering with ketchup and mustard...MMMMmmmm yum !!

sausages from europe are very very bad as compared to true sausage in USA. In USA we cannot buy good sausage in supermarket. They have no spice and much sugar and often much hot pepper. Commercial USA sausage is the worst gross stuff in the world. If you can find someone who makes sausage at their home like everyone in USA used to do, then you have better sausage than any in the whole world. If you must buy in supermarket, then it is worse than european sausages. Best of european sausages are from portugal.

Most Americans, when you mention sausage, think of breakfast sausage, which is made of pork and has sage as the main spice, along with black pepper, etc. It's prepared two ways,as a traditional link and pattied, kind of like a burger, but smaller. We usually eat them with eggs and toast, sometimes with hashbrowns, which if you're not familiar with them are grated, fried potatoes.
We also eat lots of frankfurters, though they're commonly called hot dogs here, and bratwurst and kielbasa are popular too.
