I don't know if this would help him or not, but the air in my house is very dry, especially in wintertime. This causes a constant tickle in the back of my throat. I run a humidifier almost all the time and it helps tremendously. It's a cool mist humidifier; all the doctors I've talked to and sources I've read say cool mist is better. Since this seems to hit him in the winter months, you might give it a try.

I usually cough a lot mainly because of either I don't drink enough liquids (such as water or some liquid with vitmans) or because of the circulation of the air in the room. Sometimes I get a dry cough, too, because the air is so dry and I need some moisture in the air. Maybe you should get one of those machines (I forgot it's name) where it puts moisture back into the air so your son could stop coughing. It might take a couple of days, but it'll help eventually.

Looks like a winter cough and he seems allergic to the cold dry weather. If he is indoors and it is warm and humid, it should help. Try Calcarea Phos 6X (Schussler's Tissue Remedies) and also Ipecac 30 (homeopathic remedy) in pills form. If you can consult a good homeopath, it will be better. Ayurveda also has good solutions.

Make sure he is not smoking at school or behind your back.
Buckley's mixture is the only only cough syrup that works for me and my husband.
Try that out.
