In the,uk fish and chips means fish and fires but they aren't like french fries. They are nice big fat crispy chips. Much nicer than french fries which hardly have any potato left inside them by the time they've been cooked.

I think it's fried potatoes, like french fries but thicker, and fish. I had fish and chips in Scotland and I loved it. Maybe it was where we were that made it taste so great or maybe the shop had good food.

"Fish and chips" are from England, which means that the "chips" are fries. Chips in many other regions mean fries, however "Bangers and mash" also come from England and "Bangers" in England are a type of sausage but "Bangers" from other regions mean something sexual, so you wouldn't go to Canada and ask for Bangers and mash and expect to get laid and have some mash potatoes...would you?
