If a mother has gonorrhea and has a vaginal birth, it is possible for the baby to contract the STD. It can cause blindness in newborns. Doctors usually suggest pregnant women get tested at least once for gonorrhea.

Other than that, it is usually almost always sexually transmitted.

Being you didn't elaborate, I will give you some possible answers. Gonorrhea can be spread to a child if someone in the house had it. Because the bacteria can live on surfaces.(possibly school) Also, there have been cases where children were being sexually abused.

If the mother has it, the child can contract it at birth.

When gonorrhea occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.

Non-sexual transmission is theoretically possible, but highly improbable.

I have heard that some parrots carry a form of gonorrehea that is spread easily. A friend of a girl I knew got it working with animals. I believe that it has different symptoms than the STD form.
