Because of the kidneys not being able to filter the blood and remove excess waste and fluid, and the heart's inability to assist the kidneys to do their job, excessive fluid tends to go to the hands and legs/feet. The fact that she has a fx'd hip dosen't help, in that a fracture alone can cause excessive swelling. The fluid can become so built up and the only release is for it to split the skin or / and leak out. Talk to her MD and see if renal dialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be options in her treatment.

well a build up of fluid in the legs is called edema it is caused by blood pooling in the legs and the water leaving the veins. this can be helped by using the skeletal muscles in the leg. Walking is the best bet, but with hip problems that could be tough. Just try to make sure the skeletal muscle gets somechance to move. There are pumps of sort in the leg that help return blood to the heart and brain. Laying down should help as the blood will not be effected by gravity (as compared to before)

As the kidneys are not working as well as they should, the excess fluid is sitting in your mums legs. The fluid is leaking because it has no where else to go. The term for this is 'leaking oedema'.

The medics need to address the renal problems that your mother has got, then the leaking oedema will slowly resolve.

Could be a lot of things.

As people age, body systems often start to be less efficient.

The legs could be leaking fluid from either:
1) the heart isn't pumping well
2) the kidneys are putting out enough water
3) both.

Your best bet is to talk to her doctor directly.

When you go into heart and renal failure its kinda like all the fluid and blood in your body gets backed up. The only other place for it to go is out. You'll get real puffy and will "ooze" out of sores especially if their a diabetic. They may also have a wet cough. Sometimes they give lasix (a water pill that makes you pee) to help this. Sometimes they can only help so much. Keeping swollen limbs elevated will help reduce that puffiness.

I think its when the heart is not working properly. Youre blood pumps through the muscles in legs and moves the fluid through. If her heart isn't working properly, the blood pumps slower in limbs and cause cause fluid retention, followed by leakage.

I'm sure her doc can give you more info

not good. The body is trying to survive is spite of all that has been done to damage it. If the renal system is shutting down, something must be done to support it, or supplement it, if life is to continue.
