Kappa roll (just cucumbers but delish). I also recommend the shrimp tempura or seafood tempura roll --- it's tempura, then made into sushi (all cooked). if you like soft shell crab, try the dragon roll, it's soft shell crab tempured, then made into sushi.
So first tempura, then its made into sushi rolls. CA roll, is benign & boring but a good choice for beginners.

you can also get sushi rolls that are dipped in batter & then fried.
so it's first sushi rolls & then tempured. If you like this, then slowly become more adventurous & work up to fugu, uni & live clam!

Depends on how daring you are.

Safe (no raw fish):
As many others have mentioned California rolls are good starting choice; it's just avocado, cucumber, imitation crab meat and sometimes roe (fish eggs).

Daring (raw fish):
Salmon. This is the one I usually recommend for first time raw fish sushi eaters because it tends to be the easiest one to start with.

Fun/safe:
Spider roll. It's often called this at many places - it's the fried soft crab roll with veggies (varies from place to place).

Fun/daring:
Rainbow roll. This is a sampling of different types raw fish all rolled into one. It's very colorful.

However, I would not start with anything with cream cheese or spicy sauce. Although it can be tasty, it is not very authentic and these sauces take away from the the subtle flavorings of Japanese food and raw fish.

Also for your first time, if you can, I would recommend going to a good Japanese restaurant along one of the coasts. You want the freshest fish possible if trying anything with raw fish (anytime I've eaten away from the coasts has been disappointing). Also, sushi from a Japanese trained chef is better: the cut of the fish, rice, preparation, and presentation. These are all important aspects of sushi and a properly trained chef in Japan may spend years observing and mastering rice before touching the fish.

Along with your sushi will be. . .
Pickled ginger (thinly sliced and pink) is to clean your palate between different fish (when you're eating different types of fish).
Wasabi (the green paste), you add this your soy sauce in the small dipping plate. It can be spicy so add a small amount and then add more as needed according to your taste.

Happy eating!

There is just so much to try. If you want to be super cautious try an Irish roll or any other roll with cream cheese in it. Another good option for a beginner is a spicy tuna roll. Your best bet would be to go somewhere that sells sushi by the bite instead of by the roll. They are usually about $1 per bite and you will be able to try many different things and find the ones that you truly enjoy instead of getting stuck with one or two rolls that you don't like.

I tried Sushi for the first time last week.....

I suggest to go down to your local sushi train firstly
Try sushi that has rice rolled on the outside, so then you don't get that seaweedy flavour!
or Nigri, it's a type of sushi that doesn't have seaweed at all!
At my local sushi train they have satay chicken flavoured sushi..... it's my favourite!!!

Also make sure you dip your sushi in soya Sauce, and put some pickeled ginger on top!
don't forget Wasabi - a japanese horseradish! A Very HOT green paste!

But enjoy!!!

I would try a California roll. The avocado is very yummy. Also try the little molded rice square with the butterfly shrimp on top. Not too strong of flavors for the first time.

my favorite that my sushi guy helped me put together:
spicy samon or spicy tuna with cucamber and avocade, make sure the rice is on the outside and order it with a side of eal sauce.
I dont lke the cream cheese ones at all and the sushi peices with raw fish on the outside might be a bit much for a first timer...

I would do the california roll. It only has a little bit of crab in it so it's not to fishy! Its a good way to see if you'll like it. I like suhi so much!! but i still always get the california roll. I've had a spicy tuna roll, its pretty good but a little to fishy for me. I would just go and try a couple at a time!! you'll figure you what you like and don't like after a while!!! OOOOOOOOOOh and if they have a crunch roll!!! GET IT!

The only sushi I remotely like is sushi made with salmon. Otherwise I think it's gross and I have no idea why people like it so much.

You can try the kappa roll which is basically cucumber wrapped in the rice and the kelp or california roll which is crab, avocado and cream cheese rolled up in the rice and kelp. Both very basic and yet very good.
