One huge risk factor is high cholesterol. There are about 50% of all Americans dying from clogged arteries from cholesterol. Normal cholesterol .has been thought to be below 200 mg. But countries where people do not die from cholesterol have levels of 75-100. My cholesterol was 205 2 yrs ago. I started taking Zetia and in 3 months it was 155 mg. then I started taking a statin combo and my cholesterol went to 130 mg. It has been there for 2 yrs now. A Doctor was reported as saying that heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease could be a thing of the past in 10 years!!!! I think these chol lowering drugs may be the biggest change for our health since soap. Already the American statistics on death rate from 2003-2004 plunged from 500,000 to 350,000. No for sure cause ID'd as yet, but it might be from these chol lowering meds. I still eat the wrong foods, too.

risk factors that cant be changed are those you inherited, such as a tendency toward high cholesterol or certain heart rythm irregularities that tend to run in families. even these can be controlled or treated usually. risk factors that can be changed are those behaviours that we choose--smoking, drinking, lazing around, eating lots of fat-laden foods. some birth defects that affect the heart can be corrected, some cannot. if you have any heart problems at all, you should be under the care of a good cardiologist.

cant change genetics. pretty much everything else is changeable.

they say people who eat relatively healthy, excercise regularly, dont smoke, drink in moderation or not at all and maintain a healthy weight have something like a 90% reduction in chance of getting diabetes, 70% risk reduction for heart disease and 50% less risk for cancer. and its probably pretty true.

heart disease in general, the biggies are high blood pressure, being overweight, high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle, age

Inherited ones can't be changed, but with good care they may not be so bad.
I need more info about "risk factors" to answer further.
