Its a very good question actually because it is called a virus and most viruses do get passed on through the air, so you would think this could be the case with the HIV virus as well. As a matter of fact, the virus does live once outside the body, but only for a second or two, or maybe not even that, so it would be near impossible to catch the virus just by passing someone in the street who had it....and they would have to have an open wound that spilled onto the ground that you were in contact with. HIV and many of the hepatitis viruses are only found in blood products. You cannot catch AIDS by breathing the same air as a sufferer...you can only catch it if you are exposed to their bodily fluids....like semen and blood.

AIDS/ HIV hotlines say that HIV can last 20 minutes outside of the human body--but it's really hard to catch unless you have a huge open sore and infectious fluid goes into the wound (unlikely).

It is a bodily fluid pathogen.
Now if you are asking if you can get it from blood that is outside of the body, like if someone is hurt in an accident, then the answer is yes. In bodily fluids, even outside of the body, hiv remains active.
However if the blood (or other fluid) is dry before contact, then the answer is no.
No one has been identified as infected with HIV due to contact with an environmental surface. Additionally, HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host.

No you cant get HIV in the air. HIV in transferred thru sexual intercourse or sharing a needle with someone who is infected. If people could catch HIV thru air everyone is infected!

No, HIV is carried in bodily fluids (blood, semen and vaginal secretions). Very little of the virus is found in saliva, so it's highly unlikely for it to be spread during kissing (only one case reported and both men had advanced gum disease).
HIV, thankfully, is very difficult to catch.
