HSV-1 and HSV-2 are now both common in both the genital and oral areas. The area of contamination is about 50/50 in both places because of an increased popularity in oral sex in the last few generations. You cannot get herpes if your partner is not infected (as with any STD). However, if your partner has herpes and has an active breakout, it is very easy to catch (I'm talking about kissing someone like you would kiss your grandma). You can get it anywhere on your body; it doesn't just have to be oral or genital. (I have it on my left index finger and have as long as I can remember.)

For many people with herpes, the infection is dormant, surfacing during times of physical or mental stress. Most people aren't even aware that they have it.

Use condoms, so you have less to worry about.

Herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are spread primarily by skin-skin or mucous membrane - mucous membrane contact, or by secretions in contact with skin/mucous membrane lesions.

Oral lesions ("cold sores") can be spread by direct contact with a lesion or saliva containing shed virus. Genital lesions ("genital herpes") can be spread by direct contact (this can include non-intercourse genital-genital contact) or in genital secretions carrying shed virus. HSV-1 predominantly causes oral infection and HSV-2 predominantly causes genital infection, but either can infect either location and cause the same lesions.

The age you have sex doesn't have much to do with it, other than the trend being that earlier sex = more partners in the long run, and more partners = more chance to be exposed to either virus.

Just a note: 50-80% of the sexually-active population (depending on age) have been exposed to HSV-1, most of those as children by kissing relatives with oral lesions or sharing utensils with said relatives.

There are a lot of different types of Herpes Simplex Virus. Cold sores are a form of herpes. Contact with the live virus can result in the spread/infection.
