Calamari is squid but it is most commonly known in the USA as calamari. A very popular appetizer on restaurant menus is fried calamari, which is cut up strips and pieces of it, breaded and deep fried and served with lemons, tartar sauce or sometimes marinara sauce. It is also part of the very popular Italian "Fritto Misto" which is usually served as an appetizer at Italian restaurants, basically it is very similar to Japanese Tempura. It is an assortment of vegetables (artichoke hearts, brocolli, calamari, shrimp, mushrooms, other assorted veggies and sometimes even clams or mussels) that are fried and again, served with lemon wedges and either aioli, tartar sauce, marinara sauce or lemon wedges.
