Make sure he is aware of the dangers and then trust him. If he was sick he isn't likely to repeat the experiment

Inhaler abuse is a big-time concern for health care professionals as well as for parents. I am a nurse in pediatrics and see this ocassionally. What to do? Maybe it is time to monitor his use of the inhaler. Frequent use does not give great highs. It usually give unbelievable saddness when the user dies. Do you remember the story of a model who "overused" her inhaler and was found in a bathroom a few years ago by her sister, dead and holding her inhaler.
The real issue here is not the inhaler, but the feeble attempt at drug abuse. Please try to get your son help before he gets to some harder drugs.
Also ask your doctor if a bronchodilater like Advair would be a better choice than the inhaler your son used. It is harder to abuse.
Good luck.

Well, hopefully he's learned his lesson with the inhaler. But you better get the idea of getting high out of his mind right away. Talk to him. I'm sure it's peer pressure. So many kids are doing it. Don't have any cold pills or cough syrup in the house. Make sure that if you have any prescriptions, that you put them away safely where only you can find them. Kids are taking their parents prescription drugs and using them to get high, too. Talk to him--being high is NOT cool. You lose control, you aren't yourself. If he seems depressed about something, talk to him about it. That's where addiction starts--to cope with upsetting things.

It sounds like the problem corrected itself if he got sick. Someone probably told him it could be done. Be aware that he is trying to get high and he may have people egging him on. Get dialog going with him. Have a doctor sit down with him on his next visit and talk to him about what getting high really entails and the damage it does.
And lock up household chemicals. If he's asthmatic and experimenting with drugs, he may sniff something that could kill him. Kids think their immortal.

It's good to lock up your household chemicals, but remember they may be available at his friends' houses. Also, please talk to him about the choking game. Good luck.
