I'm sorry, but you can't make him stop. He has to stop when he's ready, but let him know how you feel and tell him there is a new pill out that has been helping a lot of people. It is called Chantix and has to be prescribed by a doctor. I think it may be the answer for a lot of smokers. I have a friend that is taking it and he says he doesn't even crave a cigarette. Good luck with your father. I hope he can quit for your sake as well as his own health, but remember, nicotine is a terrible addiction and it's not easy to quit. So if he decides to try to quit, give him a lot of support. Maybe you can research Chantix on the Internet and print out a copy for him.

That is a million dollar question. Ask him to write letters and do recordings of things he would like to tell his grandchildren if he dies young from the smoking. At least then they will have some small part of their Grandfather.

My dad smokes like a chimney!

sucking on limes or chewing gum
get him some vitamin C for his lungs
1 pack of cigarettes destroys 2000 mg of C.
He has to want to quit, dont feel bad some men smoke til
they are 95 and never die of cancer.

I feel for you. If there was an answer, my father wouldn't be smoking either. The only thing I know for sure is you can't change him. He has to want to change. The best thing you can do is change yourself and try to live the happiest life for you.

do not pressure him that will only make him light another one up. just talk to him and ask him is he planning on walking you down the aisle when you get married if he says yes. then you hit him with do you think you will be alive to do it. or enough breath to do it. also does he look forward to his grandchildren and do the same thing. you see i had lung cancer and they removed my right lung and i have a really rough going at times. go to this site they will and can answer all your questions. www.whyquit.com. it is a very helpful site. good luck to you.

Keep bugging him to quit. Do some research for him about different ways to quit and get him to read about quitting. Don't forget the old guilt trip - you care about your Dad and you want to have him around for a long time! That may help persuade him to quit. Don't forget to mention that there are lot of health benefits to quitting, and support groups to help out. If he does manage to give it a shot and it doesn't work out, tell him to try again - many people have to try several times before quitting.

For every cigarette he smokes, he owes you a quarter, for every cigarette he doesn't smoke, you owe him a quarter. It may not sound like much, but it all adds-up. Incentives and rewards.

one of the things that helped me was watching a friends mom sit to catch her breath while cooking, she couldnt stand and make food for 20minutes w.out sitting(she isnt a big lady maybe 160lbs)
shes been smokin for 30+ years.

give him a bike and tell him to ride it,when he sees how much his lings dont work compaired to the last time hes ridden maybe thatll wake him up,

smokers dont genrally use much lung capacity so when they do its way noticeable...and sorta demoralizing

You can't make someone quit, but I know your pain, I watched my father die from cancer which probably was caused by all the cigs he smoked and he smoked them while on his death bed :(
