can iodine be added before the primary stain in a gram stain?

yes.ofcourse.iodine is manly added in the gram staining process of bacteria.it gives a violet color to it..(if the bacteria has a thick cell wall i.e more layers of peptidogyclans in cell wall). then comes other processes like-washing wid alcohol,adding saffranine stain,etc...
