As a food group, it is a vegetable. It has a lot of starch, so many on diets are warned to limit their potato intake, but potatoes can be a healthy choice when dieting-- they are filling and a nice baked potato, skin and all, is very healthy and a good addition to any diet, in moderation.

In weight watchers it counts as a starch. It isn't meat or grain so that puts it in the vegetable catergory for a different classification.

I would definitely class sweet potato above regular potatoes. But I don't eat that much potato so it's not really in my top 5... but still way up there on the list of faves. =0)
