Yes it happens. A Chinese restaurant that was nearby me growing up was closed down for serving dog meat.

At a Chinese place in the mall food court, my friend ordered chicken terriyaki and they served it to her with two long white feathers on it. It was very freaky, almost like the bird was plucked by them in the back. Not only that, but those definitely WERE NOT chicken feathers. I have no idea what they were. Maybe that happens in other countries. But it wasn't the norm for where I grew up.

Of course, thats not cat or dog, it's bird with two long feathers. But I remember this happened just weeks after the other Chinese restaurant was shut down. I was very grossed out.

I know of one that served cat in the mid 1970's. I was living in the small town of Jamestown, CA and I would occasionally eat at the Chinese restaurant. I also had a cat who went "missing" during the short time I lived there. Several months after I moved away, a friend in the area sent me a newspaper clipping stating that the Chinese restaurant had been busted by the county health department for having nine (9) cats in their refrigerator/freezer. Unfortunately, that's probably what what happened to my cat. I don't know where Snopes gets their information, but they are wrong!

Yes it is true. There was a scandal here in N.C. about 15 years ago when a very popular Chinese restaurant chain was busted in about 4 different cities for serving cat. They were kept in cages behind the restaurants and reporters got them on video tape. It was all over the news. The name of the restaurants was Fangs and the Dragon Palace. When the story broke the local news channels went inside the restaurants and cats were stacked up in cages in the back of the restaurant. Investigators discovered the cats were being used in place of the beef dishes. It just so happens that the day before the story broke I had lunch at Fangs. Thank God I ordered the shrimp fried rice.

I have personally never known it to happen. Random checks from food inspectors and reports from customers would make it a non-profiting business pretty quick. Hats off to the inspectors for keeping our businesses honest.
Usually, it is rumors from ill-willed folks or competitors that such is spoken. You will notice it happening more in places where there is not as much diversity.
And, if you ever go to another country where dog, cat, etc. is served, you will notice the taste difference. Dog or cat does not taste like chicken!
Final verdict: While it can't be ruled out, the chances are unlikely. Plus, you know who to call if you suspect a food fraud.

From my understanding older Chinese and Koreans will eat cat or the occasional dog, but the younger generations will not. The French and Belgians eat horse.

According to Snopes these are all complete fabrications and have no basis on reality. You can verify for yourself that snopes is a generally reliable and thorough source for verification of these myths.

I would NOT discount the possibility, but if it does happen, it is rare.
