There is no "official" national dish of India, but well known dishes are tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, paneer dishes, biryani, samosas --- these are distinctly and definitely Indian.
Curries, although Indian, can also be thai, malay, indonesian, middle eastern....

There is no food in the category of a National Food of India. This is because India is a multi-ethnic country with very different cultures and very different food habits. For example people in the North are primarily wheat eaters while those in the East are basically rice eaters.
However, one thing is common and that is the undercurrent of spices.

Rice & Rotti ( Indian bread) with a side dish (Curry/ Gravy ) is the most commonly consumed food by indians. There is nothing like national food of India. You can get lot of good indian recipes from this site

Doubt there's a national food as you put it but "tandoori" is perhaps 'representative' of India judging from the numerous restaurants overseas highlighting this type cuisine. To me "tandooris" reflect moghul food, more northern India.
"Curries" would be more representative of INDIA because most regions in India would have curried food. Curries from Thailand, Burma and other Asian countries are all influenced by Indian styled cooking.

There is no one food that can be called the national food of India because the cuisine varies greatly from one state(province) to another. Generally in the northern parts wheat is the staple food and in the southern parts it is rice.

Take up a map of India & you will see it is very large country with a great number of distinct regions, each has it's own cuisine & specialities, rice is extensively used & there are umpteen ways of rice preperation , I wouldn't even try naming any one dish as an Indian food,if I started making a list i wouldn't know where to begin much less where to end.

Strangely enough, there's nothing that's truly "Indian" Food!
The most popular "biriyani" is actually a variation of Arabic "Pilaf" called "pullao" in India.
The Tandoori style of cooking actually came from Iran!
The kebabs are originally Greek!
In southern India, they have a thing called the "appam" which is actually a Spanish/Portugese dish!
"Sambal" or "sambar" is actually of Chinese origin!
If one went into the History of the Cuisine of India, you'd find very few authentic Indian dishes and they aren't the popular ones!
