Will Gardsil work on me if I'm sexually active? I'm 16 and my boyfriend's been with one other person besides me. My pap test is normal. Have I been 'exposed' the the virus already?

Gardasil prevents the four "worst" strains of HPV. If you already one or more of those strains, it will not protect you against what you already have but will still protect you from the strains you haven't been exposed to.

Almost nobody actually has all four strains, so it's definitely useful to get the shots.

There's no way of knowing what strains of HPV you might have been exposed to, if any (most HPV is harmless by the way, the most virulent strains that cause 90% of warts and most cervical cancers are the four in the vaccine), but it's almost guaranteed that you won't have been exposed to all the strains Gardasil protects against unless you're a prostitute or something.

This is why they recommend that all women 26 or younger get the vaccine regardless of prior sexual activity.

Also, don't worry that it hasn't been out long, vaccines are safe. This vaccine hasn't been around long but it works the same way as other vaccines that have been. People are so paranoid about them for some reason... The earlier you get this one the more likely it will help you out in the future, so get it now.

The only way to prevent the disease is by not having sex. If this is not the case, you cannot stop the inevitable, meaning you cannot stop something that may just happen anyway. You are only 16 and already wondering if you have something.

Heres a task for you to do; research Gardasil.

So far, none of the original test subjects that were vaccinated in the Phase III trials, have developed cervical cancer.

Wait until there is more information about it, and more tests that have been run.
