No. They do not. You cannot have an HIV test without specifically signing consent for it. If your pre- surgery blood work was normal, you cannot assume you are HIV negative. Operating room staff treat every patient as though they have some kind of transmissible disease. This is called "universal precautions". If you are worried you may have had an exposure, you need to speak to your doctor and ask for an HIV test.
In regards to the answer below mine...the person who had gallbladder surgery... Yes, you sign a consent that your blood can be drawn and tested for HIV IN THE EVENT that someone in the operating gets an "exposure" (they are stuck with a needle or splashed in the eyes by your blood). In that event, hospital staff will approach, explain that there was an exposure, and draw your blood for testing. I don't think you can decline to have your blood tested in that situation. I don't know anyone who ever has. Given the nature of the gravity of an HIV infection, the testing protocol for HIV is very stringent. Unless you specifically signed for an HIV test and it was explained to you that it was an HIV test you are signing for, I can guarantee you that you have never been tested for HIV. Being an operating room nurse, I am 100% sure on this.

I would assume these docs know ur medical history before they just cut you open. Not unless you just got the disease. If thats the case, theres no way of knowing and there is no immediate screening. Doctors and medical staff take precautions whether you are HIV pos or not.
