I am afraid that your mom is wrong. As when you have respiratory problems usually diet is not a factor. Other than some people won't eat properly, because food taste different and sometimes you don't want to eat. I have respiratory problems and my medication leaves a bad taste in my mouth, as result often I do not want to eat at all. Usually when this happens I will drink milk, make a grilled cheese or have a bowl of cereal, as it is about the only items I can taste.

Your mom is absolutely correct. Don't drink dairy products when you have ANY respiratory problem. It does cause more mucus. The mechanics of this is chemically very complicated, but it is a fact.

Although drinking milk and eating dairy products seem to increase respiratory distress in the affected person, there is no conclusive evidence with scientific backing to prove its effects towards the distress. It is thought that milk proteins may play a role in inducing cough.

Yes, that's true. Dairy can just make the mucus worse. Just avoid cow's milk products for a while, you'll be fine.

yes, i think she's right. I have heard that before, and also...my daughter's choir teacher tells them not to drink or eat dairy before a concert because it coats the vocal chords.
