Herpes is usually diagnosed by a physical exam of the sores and usually a swab sample of the sores.
It can be diagnosed by a blood test, but I've read this is not always 100% accurate.
It shouldn't take years for herpes to show up on a blood test either. It can take a few days to a few weeks after being infected for it to show up on a blood test.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 4 yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a mindless one-night stand. I understand loads of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a huge mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date other men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/RbTXG everything got better.
Not only was I able to clear away all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method provided me the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.

Herpes simplex is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
It is widespread, affecting an estimated 1 in 4 females and 1 in 5 males in the United States[
Although certain therapies can prevent outbreaks or reduce the risk of transmission to partners, no cure is yet available
The ways in which herpes infections manifest themselves vary tremendously among individuals. The following are general descriptions of the courses outbreaks may take in the oral and
genital regions.
