There are a lot of different lung sounds, caused by different things. Asthma causes wheezing, which is a kind of musical sound (but not music we like to hear). Fluid in the lungs causes a crackly sound called rales.

You can hear these sounds and others here:

Sometimes the sounds you hear are not lung sounds, but upper airway noises.

If you're concerned, get yourself examined by a doctor. If there's nothing to worry about, you'll have piece of mind knowing that everything is OK. If there is a problem, you can get it treated.

You may have some sort of respiratory problem, but heart disease is much more insidius and hard to spot until of course you have a heart attack. If your blood work, such as cholesterol levels are ok, don't worry too much about the heart.
As for something "cracking" when you breathe, does it happen every time you breathe in, or only when you breathe deeply? At any rate, the doctor can do a chest xray to spot any physical problems and can do a pulmonary lung function test to spot any obstructive disease.
And you could indeed also have an anxiety component, discuss this with your doctor also.

Do you have chest pain? Difficulty breathing? If so call 911.

If not make a appointment to see your doctor, what you describe does not sound like heart disease. Heart disease does not make any sounds, basically it is a clogging of the coronary arteries on your heart. Nor does it sounds like asthma, asthma is a narrowing of the "tubes" in your lungs that make it hard to breath, it does not make a cracking sound. You may have a dislocated rib, have you fallen recently? Or had any injuries to your chest? That may be the cause. But in any case contact your doc. and get checked out.

If its painful when you take a deep breath, then it's most likely a rib/lung problem. To be on the safe side (never take chances with chest pain), go see your doctor, who will order several tests to determine the cause.

One of them may be an ECG (EKG, US) to determine heart rhythm and possibly a treadmill test to check for signs of heart disease. If he orders these, don't worry about them - it doesn't mean he thinks you may have a problem - it means he's being thorough.

Don't forget, when you see him, you must tell him everything he needs to know about you and your lifestyle.

Good luck
