the condition of the heart can be judged by the condition of vessels supplying the heart , if the condition of the vessels is good than there are very less chances of heart damage , but there can be other heart defects which r not related to vessels like congenital heart defects like ventricular and atrial septal defects , the heart as such can not be examined without open heart surgery but its function and efficacy can be found out by ECG , by estimation of certain enzymes like cpk , ldh etc etc

Self-examination. You can check radial pulse rate per minute. A normal pulse rate for a healthy adult, while resting, can range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. You can undergo Cardiac stress test or Echocardiography stress test at super-speciality hospital.
Three main symptoms of a heart attack:
1. Pressure or pain in the centre of the chest, lasting more than a few minutes or going away and coming back
2. Pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms
3. Chest discomfort combined with light-headedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath
Please see the web pages for more details on Pulse, Cardiac stress test and tutorials on Echocardiography stress test.

The simple answer is you can't examine your heart or anyone 's heart. If you feel you are symptomatic consult your family doctor and if necessary he will refer you to a cardiologist(heart specialist) for evaluation.
