The number one cause of chronic renal failure in America is Diabetes. The second largest cause is high blood pressure. There are other causes of course. Why are you asking?

You can damage your kidneys in a number of ways. MOST kidney damage is caused by uncontrolled diabetes. High blood pressure, left untreated can also damage kidneys. Many drugs can also. Dehydration too.

Contrary to popular belief, protein will NOT damage healthy kidneys, but can be damaging to already diseased kidneys.
