It's a virus akin to the chicken pox virus that is transmitted through contact with a person who has the virus. It is usually manifested by a cold sore on or near the mouth or the genitals which is then called genital herpes but it's the same virus. They used to say it was not transmitted unless it was a flare up, or seen on the skin, they were wrong. It can be transmitted at any time. they have a vaccine now which can protect some people, and it has side effects too. The only way to know if a person doesn't have it is to have them go to the health Dept. and get tested for all of the STD's and bring you the paper. lol Sorry, it is true. Also, the virus, genital one can cause cervical cancer in women, then you have a problem...surgery to remove any abnormal cells and the possibility of not being able to carry a child if they have to remove a lot of your cervix. So, this is a serious problem. They just haven't told the public about it because they had no money to be made. Now with the vaccine, they stand to make money and they will tell it like it's news. It's been in epidemic stage for 20 yrs. now. so, it is very prevalent among sexually active people of all ages. Good question.

Herpes, is an STD with no cure. Herpes on the mouth and on the genitals are pretty much the same thing and both can cause you to get Herpes. A cold sore can give you genital herpes. This is just location. It is the strain of the virus that you have to worry about. Frequent outbreaks or not so frequent. There is medication for the virus now.
You will know if you have the virus, because it is very painful, with sores that look like a zit with puss. Urination will be painful. For women symptoms usually start out like a common yeast infection. You should go to the doctors ASAP even if you are sure it will go away.
It is not the death of your sex life, if you do not let it be. My doctor said that your nervous system and chocolate can affect your outbreaks too.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.
