Viral chest infections are by far the most common and also the most easily spread. Close proximity to an infected individual, especially in confined conditions such as an office or classroom increases the odds of infection.' Coughs and sneezes spread diseases' was a government campaign in the early 60's and its still correct!
Bacterial chest infections can be spread from person to person also (we have to get them somehow). However they are more difficult and often need the help of the new host being at risk i.e. the young , the elderly or those whose immune systems are under par or already have another illness making them more susceptible to disease. These factors can also increase the risk and severity of viral infections as well.

You may catch someones cough or cold, that is spread easily by hand contact or droplets in the air....but it doesn't mean you will get a chest infection. If you look after yourself and do not have any immune problems, it probably will not develop into a chest infection. However, if you are elderly, very young, or as I said before, have a weakened immune system then you are more likely to have your cough/cold go on to become a chest infection.
Hope that helps.

They spread easily as all you have to do is cough and the droplets are in the air unless the person with the infection is wearing a mask. If he coughs into his hands or tissue and touches anything he has also just spread the germs. If he sneezes and uses a tissue and doesn't put it in the wastebasket right away there are germs where ever he set it.
