I had a heart attack on 25 january. It didnt feel like a heart attack, just a pulled muscle in my shoulder. After 4 days in the coronary care ward. I was transfered to another hospital for an angiogram. This detectected a blocked coronary artery for which an angioplasty and stents were used. I would like to hear from others who have been through the same proceedures about the recovery process. Before the heart attack I was fairly fit and active, now i'm puffing and panting after a 10 min walk. I'm only 44 and had a cholestrol of 6.3, but I did smoke ( notice the word DID )

I am noticing the word "did" smoke.Since you didn't say how much or how long ,I'm going to guess you were a moderate smoker for up to twenty years and you -quit- immediately after the M.I. It is CRITICAL that you don't relapse and start smoking again, since your artery are already damaged by evidence of the stents, and smoking does more damage than anything else you can do.
You may feel spent right now , but as soon as you realize this is a temporary set-back you will feel better psychologically and when you start cardiac rehab and get into regular exercise and eating a decent die without smoking you will only remember the M.I. and the angioplasty.
Your recovery and the pace is dependent on you changing the lifestyle you were living before the incident and your family history of cardiac problems.
I have recovered from several stent procedures and I would say it really takes two-three months to feel like yourself again.Don't get discouraged, suck it up, push onward and you will be fine.
Good health and good luck.

Well done for geting over it. I had two about 9 years back and am still here!! After an initial period of depression(?)I picked up and then put it behind me. Started exercisng three times a week at the gym. Don't even think about it at all now. I had the angioplasty, which was not too bad. The puffing and panting could be because you are trying too hard!! Gradually build up and set yourself targets to walk to a little further away each dsay ( don't forget to come back!). Mind your diet, but don't go mad. Eat sensibly, drink in moderation. Get on with the next 40 years of your life!! Good Luck

Dear Robert,

I recommend you develop mindfulness.

Pay attention to your heart and how you feel. Do not strain or over-exert yourself. Get plenty of rest, especially initially, remembering that your heart (muscle) has been severely damaged and weakened. It will about take four months just for that to heal somewhat. Pick up exercise gently and gradually.

While I was in hospital, several patients were re-admitted even though they had received stents previously. They assured me of how much better I would feel once I had a stent in place. I realized that these guys had (i)placed their trust in the stents,(/i) rather than (i)changing their ways.(/i)

Be careful of that. Change your ways (even more.)

For me it is a humbling process to accept my new limitations.

Hope to see you around in another three decades! :-)

Respectfully,

leastone.
