have gotten AIDS, or are dying of AIDS, or has gotten HIV. Why is this so?

HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) is most often spread through unprotected sexual contact with an infected individual and intravenous blood contamination, such as medical settings, shared drug needles or blood transfusion prior to about 1986. If these people you know are HIV positive, it means that they have been engaging in those behaviors. I've never heard of airline workers being considered a high-risk group, so you knowing several people who are all HIV positive is probably either a cluster or a statistical anomaly.
