Yes- you need to fast so the result will be accurate. You need to fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test. Your doctor may also advise you to stop taking certain medications that can affect the test. Your doctor may allow you to drink water, but other beverages may affect results.

You got many confusing answers and so here is the best way. Go to www.webmd.com and see under cholesterol. But yes, you need to fast, for about 12 hours and so you should stop eating anything (except water) from about 9 in the night when you are planning to go for the test next day morning. It will be a good idea to get your Lipid Profile done, not just total cholesterol. And Fasting Blood Sugar too in case you have not got that done recently.

yes. You are not supposed to eat for at least 12 hours, although water is still allowed. The reason is because anything you eat immediately before a test could give you a result which is higher than your actual level. I used to take them all the time when I was a kid at Kaiser Permanente and I recently took one at a private clinic because I too suffer from high cholesterol. And For every test I ever took, I was told not to eat for at least 12 hours. I hate fasting, and I also hate the tests themselves since they involve a needle in your arm drawing lots of blood for around 30 seconds. However, without the tests, you could have a dangerously high cholesterol level that could lead to a heart attack or other medical problems.

yes, and you want to make sure not to eat a fatty meal the night before. For example, if you eat shrimp or lobster or lots of butter the night before the test, it will read falsely high.
Also, you need to fast for 12 hours before the test.

The test measures your blood cholesterol and if you eat something you could affect the count.

yes. Something like nothing after midnight. Black coffee and/or water upon arising. Good news! After test you can eat all you want. Call nurse and ask before going.
