Listening to your body is very important when you are a diabetic. If your legs, ankles, and/or feet begin to feel sore and you notice them swelling, then it's time to sit down, put your feet up and rest. Check your blood sugar at the same time, maybe make a cup of tea and relax. When you're sitting down, just make sure that you're not cutting your circulation off at any point on your legs. Sitting on the couch with your legs up on it, with a pillow or two under your ankles and feet helps or sitting in a recliner with a pillow under your feet is also good. If you work on your feet, make sure you take regular breaks, or if you can't, keep shifting your weight from one leg to another. Finding an "anti-fatigue" mat helps when you have to stand.
By listening to your body, and resting whenever possible, this should minimize any swelling, and pain in your lower extremities.
Also, make sure you talk to your doctor about this. They know best. Good luck..

I have Metabolic Syndrome which includes diabetes. Painful feet is what sent me to the doctor. My feet hurt so bad. I asked the doctor, 'What don't I have blood in my feet?" He said. "You have plenty of blood in your feet, The problem is the diabetes causes a sticky substance to cover the red blood cells which causes the feet not to get enough oxygen." Have you talked to the doctor about this? I see a lot of ads in magazines for diabetic foot and leg pain, but there are side effects. I am so glad I caught mine early. Best wishes. I massage my feet and the diabetic medicines are helping me.

Keep your legs elevated as much as possible.. watch your legs and feet for any abrasions.. it's EXTREMELY easy to get infected... and if that does happen, keep them elevated with a washcloth as warm as you can stand it... with salt water. In short.. prop them up in a recliner.. on pillows.. whatever you can use. One of the worst things you can do is sit with your feet dangling.

If you can, walking a lot helps. Taking diuretic medication can help as well.
