I live in the Central Valley of California and Dairy is everywhere. Last May I started to get it, the very strong smell of the dairies and the garlic plant I pass twice a day in my head. It got so bad that it would actually make me sick. Over the months I've gone to my family doctor and to an ear nose and throat specialist. No help. Sisus flushes, even steroids nothing has helped. No infection, no head trama. This doesn't fit the things that are usually associated with the loss of smell. I've lost lots of weight not eating as everything is just awful. Nothing smells or tastes as it should. foods, soaps, chemicals even plants or my dogs stuff, or mine, it's all wrong and nasty. Sittng here at the computer in my house all I can smell is the dairy. I thought going on vacation to another state would help but it did not.

It doesn't appear to be anosmia or hyposmia. Also, if you've ruled out resp. infection, head injury, polyps in the nasal cavities, sinus infection, hormonal disturbances and dental problems it would seem to be something else that's causing this. Have you researched parosmia or cacosmia? Or even phantosmia (which can be caused by cold or damage to the olfactory nerve, but this is usually related to unpleasant smells)? Maybe it related to cranial nerve (#1) damage. Have you seen a neurologist at all?
On another note, I have read where this type of symptom can actually be caused by stress and depression and there was successful treatment with anti stress and antidepressant drug therapy.
I hope that you find the information and help that you need.
Good luck to you.
